Animated Jesus Movie ‘King of Kings’ Debuts at No. 2, Making $19 Million in Its Opening Weekend

The King of Kings, Angel Studios’ new star-studded animated film following Jesus’ life, just made box office history.

Debuting at No. 2 this weekend with a $19 million haul across 3,200 screens, it’s now officially the highest-grossing opening for a faith-based animated film. That record previously belonged to DreamWorks’ 1998 classic The Prince of Egypt which has now been bumped by a story told in a very different style — through the imagination of Charles Dickens.

Based on The Life of Our Lord, a little-known devotional story Dickens wrote for his children, the film centers on the Dickens family — Charles (Kenneth Branagh), wife Catherine (Uma Thurman) and son Walter (Roman Griffin Davis) — as they picture the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Oscar Isaac voices Jesus, with Forest Whitaker as the apostle Peter.

The King of Kings marks Angel Studios’ widest release to date and builds on the box office demand for faith-based content.  Parts 1, 2 and 3 of The Chosen have also debuted are in the box office top 10 this month, pulling in a combined $31 million.
